Here’s a simple guide for anyone interested in the darker, moodier, more nocturnal side of trip hop, from essential starting points to deeper standout albums and tracks.

As always, genre lines are loose, and not everyone will agree on what counts as trip hop, but that’s not really what this post is about. Some of these releases sit firmly within it, while others simply draw from certain parts of its sound. Either way, we think they’re all connected, whether through texture, rhythm, or atmosphere. This is also a subjective list, of course, and we had to narrow it down somehow, but hopefully you’ll find something new here. And if there’s something you love that we missed, feel free to share it in the comments below or on our socials.

Most of the releases mentioned here, along with plenty more, can also be found in our Dark / Moody Trip Hop playlist on Spotify, which we update regularly.
