Every now and then, a release arrives that completely resets your expectations of what can be done within the bounds of certain genres. Enter Philosophie du Soi, the debut EP from French avant-garde duo PAON, which feels less like a traditional music release and more like a gateway into another dimension. Released on April 19, 2026 via Scarlet Moon Records, the five-track project pairs the highly expressive talents of video game vocalist Pernelle with the intricate production of Lemm. Together, they have forged a captivating blueprint they call “space jazz,” and it is exactly as surreal and liberating as it sounds.
What makes this record so fresh is how it shatters the conventional jazz fusion mold. It is highly eclectic, moving fluidly between jazz, ambient calm, cinematic rock, and sharp electronic textures. Instead of feeling chaotic, these styles are bound together by a brilliant sense of momentum. On one end of the spectrum, PAON delivers vibrant, rhythmically complex tracks that are constantly shifting shapes under your feet. “Métamorphose” brings a lively, almost playful art-pop energy to the table, while the frantic breakbeats and electronic glitches of “Fissure de l’Irréel” show just how far the duo is willing to stretch the boundaries of electronic jazz. By contrast, you get a sense of vast, open space through the ambient textures of the two-part “Mirage” series (“Ego” and “la zone sous vide”). It is a brilliant display of contrast, juxtaposing manic electronic beats against quiet, cinematic vacuums to mirror the emotional friction of a mind trapped between dreams and real life.
It is rare for a new project to emerge with such a fearless identity. Driven by a thrilling sense of world-building and bold, imaginative arrangements, Philosophie du Soi is a spectacular opening act, one that leaves you immediately wanting to know where this story goes next.
