After nearly a decade of evolution, silence, and rebirth, Through A Glass, Darkly return with their second full-length album, SPERAMVS MELIORA // RESVRGET CINERIBVS, arriving October 7, 2025. The six-track, fifty-minute opus finds the band at their most immersive, sculpting an emotional landscape where devastation, despair, hope, and transcendence collide.

Through A Glass, Darkly first emerged from Austin in 2016, carving out a place in the doomgaze underground with a self-titled debut that paired immense heaviness with cinematic sweep. Their 2022 EP, coming after a six-year hiatus, DEVS EST IN SVO CAELO // OMNIA RECTVS CVM MVNDI, leaned further into ambience and noise, stripping back some of the heaviness but unveiling a spectral, otherworldly quality that reshaped their sound. It was a reintroduction, but their new album feels like the true culmination of that transformation.

Vinyl edition available to pre-order through Desert Drone.

At its core, SPERAMVS MELIORA // RESVRGET CINERIBVS is a single conceptual piece, divided into movements but meant to be absorbed as a whole. Its title says it all: Speramus meliora (“we hope for better things”) and Resurget cineribus (“it will rise from the ashes”). The album traces collapse, despair, and renewal, its sound shifting fluidly between extended drone passages, suspenseful buildups, and climaxes at once devastating and reassuring.

The opening track, “We Birthed The Daggers,” embodies that balance, unfolding slowly before erupting in a storm of guitars and drums, then collapsing back into ambience. Elsewhere, “With Freyed Prayers” feels like the emotional core of the album. Dense and layered, it carries the emptiness of loss but also the quiet stirrings of hope. As the album closes with “In Quiet Hopes of Absolution,” the journey reaches its most cathartic peak. The final stretch, beginning at 5:14, swells like a tidal wave, leaving the listener with goosebumps.

All in all, SPERAMVS MELIORA // RESVRGET CINERIBVS is Through A Glass, Darkly’s most full-bodied release: sonically enveloping, emotionally devastating, yet ultimately transcendent. Demanding in scope and unyielding in weight, it asks for patience, as do many of doomgaze’s finest works. Yet for those who find meaning between the abyssal drones of Sunn O))), the suffocating weight of Nadja and The Angelic Process, and the cinematic crescendos of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, it offers one of the year’s most rewarding listens.
